Asia Cup Prep: KL Rahul & Iyer’s Comeback Journey

Match Simulation at NCA

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, making their way back from injuries, have embarked on match simulations at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. This initiative is a part of their rehabilitation process. KL Rahul is recovering from a thigh injury, while Iyer had issues with his back.

Rahul Dravid’s Insight on the Asia Cup

Rahul Dravid, the head coach, mentioned the potential inclusion of injured players in the Asia Cup during a statement in Florida. Highlighting the significance of the one-week camp in Bengaluru, he emphasized the need for preparation before the tournament.

BCCI’s Confirmation and Delay

The BCCI had previously confirmed Iyer and KL Rahul’s progress with their return to the nets. The decision to delay the Asia Cup squad announcement allows the selectors to further evaluate the players’ readiness for the forthcoming tournament, a precursor to the World Cup.

Asia Cup: A Prelude to World Cup

The Asia Cup is perceived as a rehearsal for the World Cup. Although the selectors intend to finalize the World Cup squad post the Asia Cup, there might be a few adjustments due to the upcoming ODIs against Australia.

Other Players Eyeing a Comeback

Apart from KL Rahul and Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna are also on the comeback trail. Both are slated to be part of the Ireland T20Is. Rahul, when fit, is anticipated to be India’s primary wicketkeeper in ODIs, with Iyer solidifying the middle order.

Iyer and Rahul’s Rehabilitation Journey

Iyer’s last competitive match was during the Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia. Following a back surgery, he missed the IPL season. KL Rahul, on the other hand, suffered a tendon injury during IPL 2023 and has been on a recovery path at the NCA.

Bumrah and Prasidh’s Comeback Path

The NCA staff recently engaged Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah in match simulation exercises. Prasidh made his return in the Maharaja T20 Cup, representing Mysuru Warriors. Both are now joining the squad for the Ireland tour.
